View All Critic Reviews Mar 14, While more effective when focusing on the royal intrigue than when trying to create a forced parallel between the two queens in fact, the whole subplot involving Queen Elizabeth could be easily removed , this is a decent period drama that comes together quite well in the end.

Carlos M Super Reviewer. Feb 27, Even if the final 10 minutes are quite compelling, the rest of the movie isn't much more than a elaborately costumed tawdry melodrama.

Alec B Super Reviewer. Thinking about them just in terms of their visual appearnce, Saoirse Ronan probably should have played Queen Elizabeth I instead of Mary, and Margot Robbie probably should have played Not In This Movie.

Perhaps it could have performed better, had it not come out the same year as both Outlaw King and The Favourite, as its content lies somewhere between the two, but its quality pales to either.

Gimly M Super Reviewer. Feb 11, By no means a masterpiece, Mary Queen of Scots is an imperfectly paced, straightforward, and entertaining historical biopic of the kind that Hollywood used to crank out in previous decades.

Movies centering around Tudor history have always been a mixed bag. For every Anne of the Thousand Days and A Man For All Seasons, you get The Other Boleyn Girl.

Premium television appears to be the route to go for this kind of material these days, but occasionally a small budgeted picture such as this can eke out a small victory.

Yet while the helpless imprisoned queen has lost all will to harm her enemies, they continue to plot her final destruction.

With the help of his associate Walsingham Richard Warner , Cecil finds evidence of Mary's involvement in the conspiracy to assassinate Elizabeth known as the Babington Plot.

Finally Elizabeth confronts Mary, who regains her royal pride and behaves defiantly at their secret meeting. Although Elizabeth offers her mercy if she begs for forgiveness, Mary will not beg for mercy in public.

She endures the trial, conviction and execution. She knows her son James will ultimately succeed to the English throne.

For dramatic effect, the film presents two meetings between the queens, although they never met in life. Moreover, the film depicts Mary as enjoying a late-morning cup of hot chocolate in bed and even requesting it when she is a prisoner when this was not a popular drink in the British Isles until well into the 18th century [ citation needed ].

The film also implies a homosexual liaison between Darnley and Riccio. The confrontation at Bothwell's Hermitage Castle seems loosely based on an actual incident at Carberry, and it misses out the decisive Battle of Langside.

The song in the opening sequence, "Vivre et Mourir," is sung by Redgrave. The film's UK premiere was the annual Royal Film Performance on 27 March at the Odeon Leicester Square attended by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

Vincent Canby had little good to write about the film in The New York Times , describing it as "a loveless, passionless costume drama".

He wrote "Unfortunately there is no excitement whatsoever in what Charles Jarrott, the director, and John Hale, the author of the original screenplay, have put together Mary, Queen of Scots intends, I assume, to illuminate history Because both Miss Redgrave and Miss Jackson possess identifiable intelligence, [the film] is not as difficult to sit through as some bad movies I can think of.

It's just solemn, well-groomed and dumb. Roger Ebert gave the film three stars and lauded the interpretation of Redgrave and Jackson stating "Vanessa Redgrave is a tall, straight-backed, finely spirited Mary, and Glenda Jackson makes a perfectly shrewish, wise Elizabeth.

Mary, Queen of Scots received five nominations at the 44th Academy Awards ; Best Actress Redgrave , Best Production Design Terence Marsh , Robert Cartwright , Peter Howitt , Best Costume Design Margaret Furse , Best Original Dramatic Score , John Barry , and Best Sound Bob Jones , John Aldred.

When a child is conceived, Mary declares the child is "heir to Scotland and England" — offending the English.

Moray colludes with Darnley's father Matthew Stewart, 4th Earl of Lennox , to undermine Mary. They spread rumours that her child was illegitimately fathered by Rizzio, driving John Knox to vehemently denounce Mary as an adulteress.

Fearing these accusations and the possible discovery of his homosexuality, Darnley is coerced by the underminers to join them in murdering Rizzio, and reluctantly delivers the final blow.

Discovering the plot, Mary agrees to pardon the conspirators if presented with evidence that Darnley took part.

She ultimately forgives Moray, and asks Elizabeth to be her child's godmother. They agree the child is heir presumptive, despite the English court's hostility.

Mary banishes Darnley but refuses to divorce him, despite the appeals of her council, which approaches her adviser and protector, the Earl of Bothwell , to have him killed.

After Darnley's death, Mary is forced to flee without her child. Bothwell advises that her council has decided she must marry a Scotsman immediately—and that Scotsman should be Bothwell himself.

Mary resists, suspecting he was involved in Darnley's murder, but after he threatens her and subsequently rapes her, she consents.

This induces Knox to preach to the Scots that Mary is a "harlot" who had her husband killed, leading Moray and her court to demand her abdication.

Despite her objections, Mary eventually abdicates and flees to England. Elizabeth arranges a clandestine meeting, where Mary asks for help to take back her throne.

Unable to go to war on behalf of a Catholic, Elizabeth instead promises a safe exile in England as long as Mary does not aid her enemies.

Mary responds that if she does, it will only be because Elizabeth forced her to do so, and threatens that should Elizabeth murder her, she should remember that she "murdered her own sister and queen".

Placing Mary under house arrest, Elizabeth receives compelling evidence that Mary conspired with her enemies to have her assassinated, and orders Mary's execution.

As Mary is walked to the scaffold , a remorseful Elizabeth cries for Mary, who reveals a bright red dress , implying herself a martyr.

In her final thoughts, Mary wishes her son James well and hopes for peace upon his reign. A post-script reveals that upon Elizabeth's death in , James became the first monarch to rule both Scotland and England.

Alex Beckett , who appears as Sir Walter Mildmay , English Chancellor of the Exchequer, died at age 35, seven months before the film's release; the film is dedicated to his memory.

The director, Josie Rourke, followed British theatre's principle of colour-blind casting. On 9 August , it was announced that Saoirse Ronan would play the title role of Mary Stuart.
